Common keyboard shortcuts for Chrome, Firefox & Internet Explorer


We spend a substantial time every day browsing the Internet. Keyboard shortcuts for performing the most common tasks in the browser can be extremely useful to save time while surfing the Web. These keyboard shortcuts obviate the need to pick up mouse every now and then for doing simple things in the browser. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer are the three main browsers that cover more than 90% of the browser market in the world. Here I present several keyboard shortcuts (about 35 in number) that are common to Chrome, Firefox and IE, and moreover, most of these keyboard shortcuts will also work in other browsers such as Safari and Opera. Effort has made to list only those keyboard shortcuts that work in all these browsers (at least in Chrome, Firefox and IE). Other keyboard shortcuts that are specific only to an individual browser have not been included here.

Keyboard shortcuts related to Navigation:

BackspaceorAlt+Left Arrow Go to the previous page in your browsing history for the current tab
Shift+BackspaceorAlt+Right Arrow Go to the next page in your browsing history for the current tab
Alt+Home Open your homepage in the current window
F5 or Ctrl+R Reload current page
Ctrl+F5 Reload current page ignoring cached contents
Esc Stop loading of page
Space or Page Down Scroll down current web page
Shift+Space or Page Down Scroll up current web page
Home Go to top of web page
End Go to bottom of web page

Keyboard shortcuts related to tabs and windows:

Ctrl+T Open a new tab
Ctrl+N Open a new browser window
Ctrl+Tab Switch to the next tab (to the right)
Ctrl+Shift+Tab Switch to the previous tab (to the left)
Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+8 Switch to the tab at the specified position number (counting from the left)
Ctrl+9 Switch to the last tab (i.e., the right-most tab)
Ctrl+F4 or Ctrl+W Close the current tab
Alt+F4 Close the current window

Shortcuts for search on Internet and within current page:

Ctrl+F or F3 Open the Find bar for searching within current page
Ctrl+G or F3 Find next match for searched item within current page
Ctrl+Shift+G or Shift+F3 Find next match for searched item within current page
Ctrl+E Move focus to the built-in search-box in browser or its address bar to allow searching from Internet.

Keyboard shortcuts relating to address-bar:

Ctrl+L or Alt+D or F6 Move focus to the address bar of browser to start typing
Type a URL, and then press Alt+Enter Open the URL in a new tab
Ctrl+Enter Add www. and .com to the current text in the address bar and open the resulting URL. For example, type tekgazet and then press Ctrl+Enter to open page.

Keyboard shortcuts for zooming:

Ctrl and + key Zoom in current page to enlarge everything
Ctrl and key Zoom out current page to make everything smaller
Ctrl and 0 key Default zoom level
F11 Full screen mode
Shortcuts for bookmark, browsing and download history:
Ctrl+D Bookmark current web page
Ctrl+H Open browsing history
Ctrl+J Open download history
Ctrl+Shift+Delete Open the Clear Recent History window

Keyboard shortcuts for saving, printing current page and for opening files:

Ctrl+S Save current web page to computer
Ctrl+P Print current web page
Ctrl+O Open a file from your computer in browser
