If you’ve a website or a blog, you might have noticed that sometimes a large number of visitors come to your website or a specific web page from Facebook. However, when you click on that Facebook link (in your StatCounter account or other similar account), you land on a page on Facebook that warns you that you’re about to leave the Facebook site and that you should be careful (see following screenshot):

Trying to find out who linked to your website from a Facebook page

Trying to find out who linked to your website from a Facebook page

And, when you click on the Continue button on the above page, you actually land on your own web page. This means that it is not possible to find out from which Facebook page, your own web page or website was linked. This may be due to the policy of Facebook or due to the fact that your site may be linked from a Private page of a Facebook user (i.e., its privacy setting is limited to Friends, or some other narrower group of people). Is there a way to find out who on Facebook has linked to your website or web page? Continue reading »

Adobe FlashIn an earlier article how to disable Flash Player in Google Chrome browser to stop videos, I had described a method to directly change the Options in Google Chrome browser to block Flash videos appearing on web pages. Here, I describe 3 Chrome extensions that can do the same job for you in a user-friendly manner without there being any need to edit the Options in Chrome. [Also see: Block Flash videos from auto playing in Firefox]. These extensions are: (1) FlashBlock; (2) FlashControll; and, (3) Kill-Flash.

Watching an unwanted or unsolicited flash video on a website or visiting a web-page with flash ads can often push your CPU usage to a high limit. This can result into your browser and system becoming slow which can be quite irritating. In addition, these unwanted flash videos also consume your precious Internet bandwidth and distract your mind. Therefore, blocking such flash videos from playing automatically can be quite useful. When you visit a website, it may collect certain data including your IP address, visit details such as date / time, hardware details, etc. Likewise, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may collect data about the websites visited by you, browsing times, IP addresses, details of files downloaded, etc. But, how long such data is retained by the websites and/or the ISPs? Is it kept for a few days only and deleted thereafter, or it is kept for years? [Also see: Information collected by websites that you visit.] Continue reading »

EyeThere are about 285 million people in the world who are visually impaired. Out of them about 39 million people are completely blind and the remaining 246 million people have low vision. Now, there is hope for these people. Technology can help them to get their vision back. In a pioneering research work, the vision of two British men was partially restored after a micro-electronic chip was implanted in their eyes behind the retina. This tiny 3mm square microelectronic chip has a large number of light-sensitive pixels which perform the function of the photoreceptor rods and cones. The said chip was placed behind the retina from where an ultra-thin cable connected them to a control unit under the skin behind the ear. This chip is similar to the ones found in mobile phone cameras. The two patients, Chris James and Robin Millar received this treatment as a part of a clinical trial carried out at the Oxford Eye Hospital and King’s College Hospital in London under the guidance of Professor Robert MacLaren and Mr. Tim Jackson. In a previous article, I’ve mentioned about converting scanned documents to text by free online OCR. Here is a free tool called Capture2Text that can be installed on your computer and can help you extract text from any image on the screen. It is an open-source free software. OCR or the Optical Character Recognition is the method to identify and get editable text from scanned images. This helps you to edit the text contained in the image, without there being a need to type the text again. Capture2Text allows you to quickly take a snapshot of a small portion of the computer screen, then OCR it to extract text from it and save the text so extracted to the clipboard by default. YouTubeYouTube does not allow a normal user to upload videos of a duration that is more than 15 minutes. In fact, this limit was also increased from the earlier maximum limit of 10 minutes to 15 minutes for each video in July 2010. What if you wanted to upload a video to YouTube whose length is more than 15 minutes? Is it possible? Yes, but subject to certain conditions, YouTube allows you to upload videos of length more than 15 minutes. In fact, it can allow you to upload videos up to the length of 12 hours. Here is how to do it. Continue reading »

HotmailSometimes when you try to send an email from your Hotmail account, you get an error message informing you that your email cannot be sent. This is generally due to one of these three reasons: (1) the number of recipients is beyond the maximum number permissible; (2) you’ve exceeded the maximum daily limit of sending emails; or (3) the contents of your outgoing email look like a spam mail. In such situations, Hotmail will display an error message instead of sending the email to the desired recipients. Here is how to resolve this issue. Continue reading »

Darik’s Boot and Nuke or DBAN (as it is popularly called) is a free and open-source program that can do just that. FacebookFacebook allows you to tag yourself, your friends, pages or places in photos that you post on Facebook or even in the photos posted by your friends depending on the settings. In fact, you can also tag a person who does not use Facebook. Tagging yourself or your friends in a photo is quite easy. Here is how to do it. Continue reading »
